bARTer

'Ever wondered how a conversation between Alice and her therapist would go? A group of people with experience of mental ill health and mental health services use the medium of animation to explore and explain their experiences to the wider world.'
                                                                                                                         Lesley Anne Rose

In 2013 NAGAS brought together a partnership between North Tyneside Art Studio, Launchpad and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art; successfully raising funds through Time to Change to run a project entitled ‘bARTer’. The innovative project recruited Members to devise, plan and undertake an ambitious programme of large-scale public events and exhibition; exploring ideas, perceptions and conversations around mental health.

It launched on the 8th September 2014, through to the 19th October – hosted at the BALTIC. bARTer was amazingly suc-cessful with nearly 17,000 people seeing the exhibition and attending events during the 6 weeks it was on. This allowed Members to challenge stigma and discrimination by having conversations about mental health with the visiting public

We hope that one of the main outcomes of the project has been improving the confidence and ability of Members to en-gage in and contribute to the life of their community in a meaningful way. The project exemplified NAGAS’ commitment to our Members by putting them at the heart of such an amaz-ing project, tackling health inequality creatively

.
I would like to say a huge thank you to all who have been involved in whichever way you could; it would not have been possible without you!
